Hôtel George V, Right Bank

Jaro knocked on the hotel suite’s door. No answer. Winked at her portly Kommandant and knocked again.

The door opened to a dark suite of rooms.

“Ah, meine Liebe, Magda, hope we’re not interrupting.”

Jaro waltzed into the suite, dragging her Kommandant. “Schatzi’s so thirsty. Needs a drink, don’t you?”

Magda’s complexion, normally porcelain-like, looked unearthly pale. Distracted, she kissed Jaro’s cheek in a mechanical motion. Her rose-hued silk robe swished around her. As if on autopilot, she uncorked the champagne.

Jaro saw no evidence of Lange.

Madga poured everyone a flute. Jaro shot her a look and motioned her to the bathroom. Once inside the marble-tiled salle de bain, she turned the sink faucets on, then huddled close to Magda.

“Where’s Lange?”

“No idea. He’s en route.”

“What do you mean? You said he was joining you then going over to the Lutetia at ten o’clock.”

“He’ll arrive any minute. His bags came.”

“Where?”

“The butler put them in the armoire.”

The invasion plans Lange carried—he wouldn’t have let them out of his sight, would he? Their destruction was critical. Jaro felt in her pocket for the matches she’d brought to burn them and noticed Magda’s pallor.

“What’s wrong, Magda? You don’t look well.”

Magda squeezed Jaro’s arm.

“I know you’re concerned. So sweet.”

“Haven’t you healed yet?”

Magda’s lip quivered.

“Dieter’s dead. Run over. A hit and run behind the Lutetia.”

Jaro’s insides cramped. Someone knew.

And they were next.
